ARCHIVED - Andalusia region clearly showing signs of Covid uplift; Covid update April 7
Unless there are significant changes over the next 24 hours, 63 municipalities in the Spanish region of Andalusia will be under perimeter closure as of Friday as cases and incidence rates are revealing an upward trend that suggests the beginning of a fourth wave of Covid-19.
The Andalusian statistics institute reported 38 coronavirus deaths and 1,767 new cases on Wednesday (April 7), a whopping 759 more cases than the previous day, bringing the 14-day accumulated incidence rate in the region up to 163.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the latest 14 day period and placing the region firmly within the high-risk category.
There are 1,334 Covid patients in Andalusian hospitals, 290 of them in ICUs, and 90,681 active cases in the region.
This is an unwelcome upward surge in new cases, but reflects a national trend which is starting to build into the start of an upward swell, which could very easily develop into a fourth wave.
The Andalusian authorities announced on Wednesday that they would not be intensifying the restrictions currently in place, but would be maintaining them for the nest two weeks: Click to see full article listing the restrictions.
With the regional authorities due to update the incidence rate data and restrictions on Thursday, 34 towns and villages face perimeter closures as their rates are higher than 500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (18 more than last week), and 11 face perimeter closures and closure of non-essential businesses as their rates are higher than 1,000 per 100,000.
