ARCHIVED - Aguilas brings forward autumn rambla clearance
Fears of gota fría storms grow in the Costa Cálida as the unusually warm summer ends
Throughout the Region of Murcia there appears to be heightened expectation this year of heavy late summer and autumn “gota fría” storms of the kind which can cause serious flooding, and in consequence many Town Halls, Águilas among them, are bringing forward the annual clearance of the “rambla” natural floodwater channels in order to allow water to flow freely into the sea.
The anticipation of heavy rain is based partly on the very hot summer in the Costa Cálida this year, as elevated sea temperatures tend to favour the formation of isolated high altitude depressions (the main atmospheric phenomenon associated with “gota fría” events”). Although these storms are highly unpredictable, on August 17 Águilas councillor Bartolomé Hernández referred to them and to the heat when he announced that work is already about to begin to clear the ramblas of Cañarete and Matalentisco in built-up areas.
At the same time, where the responsibility for clearing the ramblas lies not with the local government but with the CHS water infrastructures authority a request has been made for urgent action to be taken, while Hidrogea have been asked to redouble their efforts to ensure that local drainage systems are in full working order.

Oficina de Turismo de Águilas
Águilas boasts 28 kilometres of coastline, with many fine, sandy beaches, sheltered coves and unspoilt natural beaches. It is a great summer favourite with Spanish holidaymakers, so always has a superb programme of concerts and activities throughout the summer, as well as the biggest carnival in the Region of Murcia, 40 days before Semana Santa (Easter.)
Throughout the year it also has a number of museums and historical attractions, a castle with fabulous views overlooking the bay and several other points of interest, all of which make it an good place to visit for days out. Throughout the year the tourist office runs monthly guided tours and the route of the railways, which explores the railway history of the town.
The tourist information office is located in the Plaza de Antonio Cortijos, just a short walk from the sea front and Plaza de España, a cool, shaded space in which to enjoy a coffee.
