Alicante Government finally puts a stop to illegal work in flood-prone area after complaints from residents
People of the area have complained for months about the work on the non-urbanisable plots in Cañada del Fenollar
The City Council has announced, after months of complaints from local residents, that it has suspended the illegal works that have been carried out in a flood-prone area. The measures by the City Council are the first that have been taken against the illegal settlements in rural areas of Alicante despite complaints by the concerned population.
According to the Government of the local area, the Department of Urban Planning has already begun to suspend works of this kind in the area. The mayor has requested that the Valencian Agency for the Protection of the Territory prioritise the processing of files related to these infractions.
The municipal decree has put an immediate suspension and halt to building or land use in the flood-prone non-buildable area. The building on such plots is illegal and they do not adhere to the local laws and planning of the area.
The Government has warned that in the event of non-compliance the "Local Police officers will proceed to seal off the works and the Judicial Authority will be informed of the possible commission of the crime of disobedience/resistance."
The decree has been put in place in order to stop people building houses and shelters in flood-prone areas to minimise the risk of danger for the people that live there.
The decree was announced this past Wednesday, after a meeting of the Technical Committee for the Evaluation of Risks for Emergencies. the forum, established on November 8 after the devastating DANA that claimed more than 220 lives in the province of Valencia, brings together officials from different councils.
Furthermore, the residents that have been complaining about the lack of actions from the government have applauded these measures. Some however are still unsure as to the amount of work the Council will deliver on. José Cremades, from the Cañada del Fenollar residents' association, stated "It is good news, it is a start, but it is not the end."
