ARCHIVED - Almeria swimmer rescued by helicopter after being swept away by current
The man reportedly got into trouble swimming in the Cala de los Amarillos in Almeria, Andalucia.
Marine Rescue services were forced to fly out a helicopter to save a swimmer who was swept away by the current off the coast of Almeria.
The incident took place at around 5 pm on Saturday, June 12 when emergency services received reports of swimmer who had gone missing in the water near to the coast of San Jose in Almeria.
In order to cover the widest possible area a helicopter was used to search for the man who was eventually located in a rocky area of the coast which would be difficult to access by land. After several attempts, the helicopter was able to pick the man up at around 6 pm, before transferring him to the airport where an ambulance was waiting to treat him for cuts he had sustained against the rocks.
The number of drownings off Andalucia’s coasts increases in the summer months as locals and tourists take to the water to cool down and last month rescue workers found the body of another swimmer who drowned off the coast of Almeria following a five-day search.
Every year rescue workers warn swimmers to take care while in the water while councils across the region hire teams of lifeguards to protect swimmers on the more populated beaches.
