ARCHIVED - Almost 400 Covid recoverees donate blood for treatments in Almeria province
Blood and plasma donations in Almeria province in Andalucia are higher than last year.
Around 400 Covid recoverees in Almeria province have donated blood in a bid to improve treatments for those still suffering from the virus.
The donors, who have given either blood or hyperimmune plasma, join a group of around 14,000 regular donors in Almeria province who by May had given 9,500 blood donations and 1,600 plasma donations.
The figures represent an increase of 10 per cent in blood donations compared to last year and a rise of 90 per cent in plasma donations compared to the year before, according to the Almeria Blood Transfusion Centre.
The centre is now encouraging more locals to come forward as donors as hospitals begin to perform surgeries once again following the pandemic, increasing the demand for blood.
Currently Almeria needs around 60 donations a day to keep up with the demand from operating theatres.
The province currently has 27 patients in hospital with the virus, of which six are in intensive care units, and the lowering of figures has allowed health workers to be able to re-open non-essential surgeries.
Meanwhile, the province’s vaccinations continue to be rolled out, with Almeria council opening two further sports centres to be used for vaccines.
