ARCHIVED - Andalucia rebels: we will offer AstraZeneca second doses to those who want them if government will not
Thousands in Andalucia are waiting for their second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine.
Following weeks of uncertainty over whether Spain’s central government will recommend a second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine to those who have received their first jab, the Junta de Andalucia has announced it will offer the second vaccines to anyone who wants them next month if the government does not clarify its stance and make the required decision.
President of the Junta de Andalucia Juanma Moreno said that the region will administer the second doses to anyone who volunteers for them and signs a consent form if the central government does not offer new guidance within a month.
He said: “Either they make their decision or I make it,” adding that if the government has not made an announcement by then Andalucia will not take its current recommendations into account.
He also called for speed over the issue as Andalucia already has 200,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine accumulated in freezers unable to be used.
The politician added that many people have been contacting Andalucia officials wanting to receive their second dose voluntarily and that the European Medicines Agency (EMA) had recommended they be given, saying “what do I do with 200,000 vaccines waiting in a refrigerator while tens of thousands of Andalusians want to be vaccinated?”
Latest figures reveal that 34 per cent of residents of Andalucia aged over 16 have now received one dose of a vaccine, while officials said they hoped this figure will reach close to 50 per cent by the end of June.
