ARCHIVED - Andalusia receives 700,000 passengers from international airports in September
The figures released this week show 382% growth on the same month last year
A total of 689,937 passengers flew to Andalucía from international airports in September 2021, almost four times more than the same month last year (+382%). In what can be hailed as good news for the Spanish and Andalusian tourist sectors, 13.2% of travellers to Spain as a whole went through airports in Andalucía last month.
Málaga airport registered the most tourist arrivals from international terminals in the region, with 569,728 passengers of the 689,937 going through Málaga, and was also fourth position nationally just behind Adolfo Suárez-Madrid Barajas airport, Palma de Mallorca and Barcelona.
Of the total number of international passengers who travelled to Andalusia last month, the majority, 497,114 (72.05%) travelled on a low-cost airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air. At a national level for Spain, the majority of foreign tourists coming in were from Germany, with almost one million passengers (+688% compared to September 2020). This is followed by the United Kingdom, with 877,108 (+387%); Italy, with 428,661 (355%) and France, with 394,856 (181%).
The Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Reyes Maroto, stressed that these figures reflect that Spain is “heading in the right direction” and shows that “Spain is perceived as a safe and quality destination where you can enjoy a few days’ rest”.
