ARCHIVED - Andalusia Health Minister urges pregnant women to get vaccinated
The age group most affected by the fifth wave in Andalucía, 20 to 40-year-olds, is also the age bracket with the most pregnant women
The regional Minister of Health and Families, Jesús Aguirre, has recently sent out an urgent message to pregnant women in Andalucía to get “vaccinated as soon as possible”.
He confirmed that there is “an important volume of pregnant women in hospital” with coronavirus, partly due to the fact that the fifth wave is mostly affecting people aged between 20 and 40, which is the most likely age group for pregnant women.
Sr Aguirre called on women “at any stage of pregnancy” to go to their health centre to receive a vaccine as soon as possible.
He added that they shouldn’t wait until after the birth and emphasized the urgency of administering vaccines to this age group, as Covid can cause complications for both the mother and the new-born.
Hago un llamamiento a las embarazadas, sea cual sea su estado de gestación: acudan a vacunarse. Los riesgos de padecer COVID aumentan en las gestantes y también puede afectar al feto, en cambio la vacuna, protege también al bebé.

Experts from the Health Ministry strongly recommend that pregnant women be vaccinated against Covid at any stage of gestation, especially after a recent case in the Region of Murcia in which a 40-year-old woman with the virus died two weeks after an induced birth.
Another woman, aged 29, is also in intensive care with Covid in Murcia after a caesarean.
Finally, the Health Minister stated that the cumulative incidence rate is no longer an important variable with which to measure the pandemic, as most new cases are asymptomatic young people.
Hospital pressure and ICU occupancy are much more “valuable” parameters to measure the gravity of the fifth wave, he added, with doctors in Málaga echoing this concern as hospital admissions rise across the region.
