ARCHIVED - Andalusia reports 11 deaths and 2,034 new coronavirus cases: Covid update 19 April
The region of Andalusia has returned to the extreme risk level as the incidence rate has risen for the fifth day in a row
There have been 2,034 new coronavirus cases and 11 deaths in Andalusia at the weekend, the latest data from the statistics office on Monday (19 April) has revealed.
The number of new cases was down 443 from Friday, and the number of deaths reported remained the same. However, there are still about twice as many new cases being reported as there were a month ago.
Moreover, the 14-day accumulated incidence rate has increased to 263.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, up 22.5 points from Friday and putting the region back at the extreme risk level, causing alert levels to be updated and safety measures tightened. In Seville, Córdoba, Granada and Almería cities, for example, bars and shops must once again close at 8 pm.
The committee of experts that reviews the situation and determines restrictions was due to meet this Wednesday, 21 April, to decide on the measures to be enforced as of Friday. However, the regional health minister has said that they may wait a week to see how the situation evolves.
Although the 14-day incidence rate has increased, the minister said, the 7-day rate is only at 115 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, which means that the increases in the last seven days have been less pronounced than in the preceding 7 days.
Nonetheless, there are more than 1,500 coronavirus patients in Andalusian hospitals for the first time in a month and a half, the health authorities have confirmed. The total on Monday morning was 1,532, up 75 from the day before, and 308 of them were in ICUs, six more than on Sunday and also six more than a week ago.
While hospitalizations are clearly on the rise, they are still well below the figures reported at the peaks of the previous three waves of the pandemic: 2,708 on 30 March 2020, 3,478 on 10 November and 4,980 on 2 February.
The good news is that by Sunday, the health services had administered 2,204,882 doses of coronavirus vaccine across the region, and 593,718 residents in the region have now been fully inoculated with two doses. However, the regional government has yet againreiterated to the national government that it needs more doses and can "administer the vaccine as rapidly as it is supplied".
