ARCHIVED - Andalusians celebrate as regional government opens provincial borders
The movement restrictions between the eight provinces of Andalusia are being removed on Thursday April 29
Roads in the eight provinces of the region of Andalusia may well be busy at the weekend as many workers are likely to take advantage of the May Day holiday to visit relatives or travel for the first time in months.
Cheers could be heard coming from Andalusian homes on Tuesday evening (27 April) when the regional president, Juanma Moreno, officially announced the news that everyone had been hoping for: the removal of the ban on travel between provinces.
Although the region’s external border will remain closed, the lines between its eight provinces (Almería, Granada, Málaga, Cádiz, Huelva, Seville, Córdoba and Jaén) can be crossed freely for the first time in three months as of Thursday 29.
Sr. Moreno explained that the move is possible as the fourth wave of Covid-19 has turned out to be less severe than was expected and with the vaccination campaign proceeding well, the region is now “better prepared”.
He did, however, call on citizens to be very careful not let their guard down as the threat of coronavirus is far from over.
Although free movement will be allowed within the region, the curfew between 11 pm. and 6 am. remains in place.
Businesses may continue opening until 10.30 pm. but there has been one small change: while bars and restaurants cannot accept new customers after 10.30 pm., those already inside will be able to stay until up to 11 pm. at the very latest.
However, clients must also be home by 11 pm. due to the curfew, so the change is likely to cause some disagreements between the authorities and barowners over the weekend.
