ARCHIVED - Italy imposes Covid tests on travellers from Spain
On Wednesday a new order was signed to enforce covid tests for travellers from Croatia, Malta, Greece and Spain
Italian Health Minister Roberto Speranza has confirmed that the country will now require all travellers from Croatia, Greece, Malta and Spain to undergo Covid testing when entering Italy.
"We must continue on a path of caution to defend the results we have obtained over the past months through sacrifices by everyone," he said on Facebook.
At one point the developing Covid-epidemic in Italy was the focus of world attention but gradually numbers fell and Italy succumbed to the economic pressure of having to re-open for business and allow tourist visitors into the country to compete with other summer tourist destinations.
Cases, however, are rising once again, and on Wednesday the country recorded 481 new cases and 10 deaths. The authorities have maintained basic health measures such as the wearing of masks, washing hands and social distancing, but are now extremely concerned about the entry of Italian nationals from other European nations where Covid incidences are higher, such as Spain, which is now averaging over 3,000 new cases a day.
