ARCHIVED - Cadiz asks regional government for help controlling botellones
Police in the city of Cádiz, Andalucia, are unable to deal with the unruly youngsters who gather on the streets every weekend
The Town Hall in Cádiz has asked the Junta de Andalucía for help to stop the frequent and uncontrollable gathering of young people on the streets, also known as ‘botellones’.
Despite the advancing fifth wave of coronavirus in Andalucía and the anti-Covid measures in place across the region, the local authorities in Cádiz are still having to deal with hundreds of young people gathering in public parks, beaches and streets to drink once the bars and restaurants close at 2am.
Every weekend, the police have to intervene in the massive street parties, as well as deal with drunken fights and dangerous driving.
The main areas frequented by youngsters are the beach promenade near Playa Hotel, the playa de la Caleta, the Zona Franca industrial area and numerous plazas in the city centre.
The head of Security and Local Police in Cádiz, Demetrio Quirós, has mentioned that this situation is not exclusive to Cádiz, as the authorities in Sevilla and Málaga also had to deal with hundreds of rule-breakers last weekend.
He also added that “if bars close at 2am and the regional government doesn’t establish any mobility restriction or rules against being out on the street” then the situation is “practically impossible to control”.
Sr Quirós also expressed his frustration that all of the responsibility seems to fall on local Town Halls, stating that the Junta needs to take responsibility and put the necessary tools in place to control the situation.
Several coastal municipalities in the province of Cádiz have recently refused to close their beaches after 11pm, despite the regional government’s advice.
