ARCHIVED - Cadiz traffic fatalities exceed pre Covid levels
Driver distraction has been the largest contributor to accidents in Cadiz, Andalucía
Spain has committed to reducing the number of fatal and serious accidents on the country’s roads, and the DGT has this week announced a campaign in the lead-up to Christmas to crack down on motorists driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
Data provided by the Provincial Traffic Headquarters in Cádiz show that there have been more than 620 accidents resulting in injuries so far this year, with 23 fatalities. This figure actually exceeds the twenty road deaths recorded in 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic struck.
As can be expected, traffic-related fatalities in 2020 dropped to 12 as a result of limited mobility during the state of alarm and the overall accident rate fell to 498 over the 12 month period.
The figures show that fatal accidents in the province of Cádiz this year were spread across many different roads, but the most deadly has proven to be the A-7, on which there has been three fatalities so far. Next on the list are the A-384, in the Sierra de Cádiz, and the A-2003, which connects the rural area of Jerez, the municipality with the most deaths.
It was determined that possible driver distraction led to the majority of accidents, followed by cars travelling in the opposite lane, pedestrians on the road, unsafe overtaking, not respecting the safety distance, risky manoeuvring and speeding.
Sadly, in two of the reported accidents in Cadiz there was more than one fatality. In July, two young men aged 33 and 25 died in Villamartín, on the A-384. The other occurred in Jerez, on the A-382, when a 74- and 24-year-old man and woman died.
Nine of the deceased were younger than 40 years old.
