ARCHIVED - Cieza police arrest Japanese marijuana farmers
The family clan is suspected of illegal cannabis cultivation and delivering drugs to Switzerland
An illegal drug cultivation and smuggling outfit has been dismantled in Cieza, in northern Murcia, after a Japanese family posing as hemp farmers were arrested for growing and selling marijuana.
Operation ‘Nage’, carried out by the Guardia Civil in the Region of Murcia, has resulted in the arrest of two people who rented a farm in Cieza where they allegedly cultivated sativa cannabis on a mass scale.
The Guardia Civil has seized nearly 5,000 cannabis sativa plants, cultivation material and documentation from this and another property in Blanca.
The proceedings began last August, when police discovered the existence of a Japanese family who had apparently rented agricultural land in the town of Cieza where they were allegedly cultivating legal industrial hemp.
Legal hemp cultivation needs specific necessary permits, but the farm in Cieza did not appear in the register of farms for the Region of Murcia, nor did it have any type of administrative authorisation, which led police to suspect that it could be a front for an illegal plantation.
The Guardia Civil carried out two searches that resulted in the seizure of 4,779 cannabis sativa plants – more than a thousand of them in the form of buds – plus material for cultivation and distribution, as well as documentation related to the dismantled criminal plot.
According to the investigation, the two Japanese men arrested had a Swiss buyer to whom they delivered the marijuana.
The investigation is ongoing.
