ARCHIVED - Coastal town of Torrenueva Costa in Granada invests into coastal path and campervan park
The authorities in Torrenueva (Granada) are also thinking about creating a nine-bedroom hotel by the beach as part of post-covid economic recovery plans
The council in Torrenueva Costa on the Granada coast has decided to kill two birds with one stone by employing locals to spruce up the town’s attractions and create new ones, thus providing work and hopefully boosting tourism in the post-covid months.
The health and financial crisis caused by Covid-19 has dealt a heavy blow to employment in the tourism and hospitality sector in the area, so the local authorities have decided to draw on the regional Aire employment scheme to help some of those affected.
Work will be done to clear up and illuminate the area around an old water cistern dating back to the early 20th century, where 250,000 euros are going to be spent to turn it into the town’s first museum.
A pedestrian path is to be created alongside the Almería road, and improvements are to be made to the ‘Ruta de los Miradores’ hiking path that runs along the coastline. Considered to be the crown jewel for tourism in the area, the nine-kilometre-long path runs across the clifftops, providing stunning views out to sea from nine lookout points. The project has a budget of 750,000 euros, and local gardeners will be employed to keep it neat and tidy.
With an aim to attracting visitors to not only come and see Torrenueva but also stay there for a while, the council is considering a project to turn an old house beside the beach in the Jolúcar area into a nine-bedroom hotel, and there are also plans to create an area for motorhomes to park, all part of long-term efforts to secure local employment and create long-term improvements to the area.
