ARCHIVED - Coca Cola holds European trials of eco-friendly bottle tops in Spain
The aim of the 10-week campaign in Spain is to reduce plastics contamination
As awareness continues to grow of the need to reduce single-use plastics and protect the world’s oceans, Coca-Cola have announced that the trial of a new recyclable bottle top in Europe is to be carried out in Spain.
The 10-week trial period has already begun, with tops attached to bottles by a collar in various parts of the regions of Catalunya, the Balearics, Aragón, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Granada, Jaén, Málaga, Almería, Cádiz, Sevilla and Toledo. 6 million of the new-style 500-millilitre bottles are to be sold, containing original Coca-Cola as well as sugar-free, light and caffeine-free versions and Schuss.
The new tops have been designed at the company’s R&D centre in Brussels and it is hoped they will prove convenient to customers as well as environmentally friendly, conforming to EU Directives on single-use plastics. Special care has been taken to ensure that the bottle can be hermetically re-sealed after it is first opened, thus preserving the all-important fizz of the beverage inside.
Most importantly, though, it is hoped that consumers will respond by making sure that they dispose of empty bottles appropriately, complete with the tops, thus avoiding plastics contamination.
