ARCHIVED - Couple arrested in Murcia for setting a woman on fire before trying to suffocate her
Police sources claim that the attempted murder was sparked by an earlier traffic accident involving the victim
Guardia Civil in the Murcia outlying district of Los Ramos have arrested a man and a woman for attempted murder, after they allegedly set fire to their victim before trying to smother her by putting a plastic bag over her head.
According to police sources, the victim claimed in her statement that she had gone to her neighbours to discuss an earlier traffic accident in which they had all been involved, to try and resolve the dispute so that she would not get a fine or points on her licence. She claims that the perpetrators sprayed her with some flammable liquid as soon as they opened the door and set her alight.
Luckily, the victim was quickly able to douse the flames, but the alleged aggressors took the opportunity while she was distracted to pull a plastic bag over her head in an attempt to smother her. The victim briefly lost consciousness, but as soon as she came to, was able to flee the property and alert the Guardia Civil to the incident. Officials have speculated that the attackers thought their victim was dead and lowered their guard, allowing her to escape.
A specialised unit of the Guardia Civil in Los Ramos sprang into action to prevent the suspects from fleeing. Surveillance teams were discreetly placed at their house and surrounding streets while officers waited for an arrest warrant. This, however, was not needed as in the early hours of Wednesday morning, July 21 the couple were arrested trying to slip past the surveillance team and flee.
The pair has been placed at the disposal of the Examining Court of Murcia, which has ordered the woman’s imprisonment and issued a restraining order for the man. The victim was taken to hospital in Murcia city having suffered numerous burns.
