ARCHIVED - El Corte Inglés in Mijas to reopen this summer with a new fashion outlet
The outlet will house over 150 clothing and fashion brands, but four floors of the commercial centre will remain closed until the remodelling is complete
The Costa Mijas commercial centre, located in Las Lagunas, will be reopening this summer with a new fashion outlet with over 150 popular brands, as part of the restructuration project which is currently being carried out by El Corte Inglés on a national level.
The remodelling will take place on the ground floor, which will be reopened as a 7,000 square-metre fashion outlet, with almost the entire portfolio of brands that El Corte Inglés offers nationwide.
Last Saturday (June 5) was the last day that the commercial centre was operating normally, as now the ground floor, along with the first, second and third floors, are closed to the public.
However, the floor known as the semi-basement (semisótano), where the large Hipercor is located, will remain open for customers during the usual business hours. The basement 1 floor (sótano 1) will also stay open to the public, offering terrace and garden services, as well as a pick-up area for online orders.
Although the ground floor will be reopened shortly as a fashion outlet, the company has not yet stated what will happen with the first, second and third floors.
This remodelling project is part of the general restructuring of the company on a national level which has resulted in many redundancies across Spain, but despite the reconstruction, the El Corte Inglés in Mijas will be maintaining almost 70 per cent of its workforce.
Of the 460 employees who worked at this commercial centre, 300 will continue to work at the Las Lagunas site, while 50 workers will be transferred to the city of Málaga and 50 more will be sent to Marbella.
El Corte Inglés has been hit hard by the pandemic and the general trend towards online shopping which has been exacerbated by the Covid crisis.
