ARCHIVED - Emergency water distribution to residents affected by Sierra Bermeja wildfire
Charities donate most of the drinking water to fire-damaged towns in Andalucía, while local government offers “emotional reinforcement”
Residents of the villages in Málaga which were affected by the forest fire that burned down nearly 10,000 hectares of natural parks in Sierra Bermeja last month have received an extra 5,000 litres of water while local authorities check the state of wells and aquifers in the area to see if it is safe to drink.
Residents have complained of being abandoned by government authorities, even as the residual fire smoulders away just under the surface of the ground, waiting to pop up again and start new wildfires at any moment.
The latest instalment of water has been donated by the charity organisation Corazón y Manos, and is in addition to the 22,350 litres that were already given out to local people in September. The three villages that have benefited from this latest contribution are Genalguacil, which received 2,000 litres; Jubrique, which got another 2,000 litres; and Júzcar, with 1,000 litres.
Previous supplies of drinking water were donated by private charities like Bancosol (9,450 litres) and The La Caixa Foundation and CaixaBank (7,000 litres), while public bodies have contributed markedly less: San Miguel (3,000 litres), Estepona Town Council (1,850 litres), and Ronda Town Council (1,050 litres).
What is being offered by public town councils, though, according to the head of the Citizenship area of the Malaga Provincial Council, Natacha Rivas, is an “emotional reinforcement initiative” aimed at improving the mental wellbeing of residents of those villages whose basic services and water supplies were affected by the Sierra Bermeja fire, including the remote towns of Alpandeire, Faraján, Genalguacil, Jubrique, Júzcar and Pujerra.
