ARCHIVED - Fifth wave continues to gain traction across Andalusia: Covid update July 29
13 further Covid deaths in the Andalucía provinces of Málaga, Almería, Cádiz and Jaén
Latest Andalucía Covid update reveals 4,893 new positives confirmed by PCR or antigen tests in the past 24 hours, which is the third highest figure of the fifth wave, after 5,721 cases on Friday (July 23) and 5,318 cases on Saturday (July 24).
The province with the highest number of new cases is Málaga (1,284), followed by Sevilla (897), Cádiz (744), Córdoba (522) and Granada (420), while Jaén, Almería and Huelva all have under 400 cases each.
Fatalities: in the past 24 hours, 13 further Covid-related deaths were reported in the Andalucía region: eight in Málaga, two in Almería, two in Cádiz and one in Jaén. These new fatalities mean that the number of people who have lost their lives to Covid in Andalucía is now 10,343.
Hospitalisations: the number of Covid patients in the region continues to grow and is now 1,169; 18 more than the previous update (July 28) and 258 more than this time last week (July 22). In addition, 204 of the 1,169 patients are in intensive care.
Recoveries: 1,762 people were given the all-clear in the past 24 hours; 621,686 in total since the start of the pandemic.
Vaccines: almost 100,000 Covid vaccines have been administered since yesterday’s update: 99,109, meaning that 66.16 per cent of the regional population has now received at least one dose.
The cumulative incidence rate in the past 14 days has increased for the 28th day in a row, reaching 554.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, although Andalucía’s rate is still below the national average of 699.84.
The rising Covid cases in the region, especially amongst people aged between 20 and 40, have prompted experts to urge pregnant women to get vaccinated as soon as possible and, in a recent statement, the president of Andalucía refused to rule out the use of vaccine certificates as access requirements for bars, restaurants and other establishments.
