ARCHIVED - First ever fully electric plane takes off in Barcelona
The green aircraft will be the first in Spain used to train new pilots
Sabadell Airport in Barcelona celebrated the inaugural flight of Spain’s first all-electric plane, a two-seater Velis Electro aircraft that will join the existing fleet at the Aeroclub Barcelona-Sabadell. The state of the art model generates zero noise pollution and is the first 100% electric craft of its kind in the country.
Since the European Aviation Safety Agency certified the plane, the Aeroclub has also become the first Spanish pilot training centre to use renewable energy, a feat which Sabadell City Council believes represents “a real revolution” for flying schools and clubs.
The electric engine can fuel the Velis Electro for one hour, although the propeller is also capable of recharging the battery during flight. However, with the continuous advances being made in this field, the flight time is expected to be extended greatly in the near future.
