ARCHIVED - Fuengirola employs 17 women to carry out flood-prevention work
The previously unemployed crew members are working to remove build-ups which could cause flooding in Fuengirola (Andalucía)
The Town Hall of Fuengirola, in the province of Málaga, have hired 17 new temporary employees to carry out clean up work in the Real stream, as part of the municipality’s efforts to prevent flooding.
The main goal of the clean-up operation is to prevent the floods which usually accompany the autumn rains in Andalucía and the seasonal downpour has already started in many parts of Spain, including in the neighbouring Region of Murcia.
Currently, plants, debris and other elements which have built up since last winter are being removed from the banks of the Fuengirola river using heavy machinery, but other debris is being removed manually from the smaller water channels, as is the case of the Real stream.
This is where the new crew come in, as the 17 previously unemployed women have been working their way through the build-up since September 15, giving rainwater a clearer path through the municipality.
According to the council, these new contracts are part of the PER (Agricultural Employment Promotion Plan) and will last until the end of the month (September 29). Through the PER scheme, local administrations receive subsidies to hire unemployed people who carry out a specific job for a certain period of time.
