ARCHIVED - Huge new sports pavilion in Jaén set to open this June and increase sporting tourism potential
The Olivo Arena will hold up to 10,000 spectators at a variety of sporting events and hopes to attract major sporting activities
The regional government of Andalucía has announced that the new “Olivo Arena” provincial sports pavilion in Jaén is likely to open its doors in June 2021, with the final phase of construction now completed.
Visiting the venue on Thursday, Javier Imbroda, the minister for Education and Sport in the regional government, stated that the building will be handed over on 22nd April, after which it is the responsibility of the Town Hall of Jaén to grant the necessary licences for it to be brought into use. Once open, it is hoped that the facility will become a major national and international sports tourism destination, with professionals and clubs visiting the area for pre-season or mid-season training breaks and a variety of events being hosted.
The Olivo Arena is one of the largest sports investments ever undertaken by the government of Andalucía at a cost of approximately 20.5 million euros, and its modern design stands on a plot of over 41,000 square metres alongside the Recinto Provincial de Ferias y Congresos. The main sports area measures 48.4 metres by 28.4 metres and is designed to host sports such as futsal, basketball, handball and tennis, and to welcome almost 6,600 spectators (adaptable to hold 10,000 for certain events).
