ARCHIVED - Invisible nets used to trap birds illegally in El Ejido
Nets were found with dead birds inside when officers were sent to inspect properties in the municipality in Almería, Andalucía
Three people are under investigation for alleged offences against wildlife after Guardia Civil officers discovered invisible nets on two country properties in El Ejido, Almería.
The officers were sent to inspect the properties after receiving information that there were illegal nets in place to catch birds and found a total of four invisible or ‘Japanese’ nets containing the lifeless bodies of 87 House Sparrows, Greenfinches and European Goldfinches. Other birds which were luckily still alive were quickly released by the officers, who seized the nets and identified the owners of the properties.
These birds are protected under Spanish and European nature protection laws and their capture is forbidden under the criminal code.
