ARCHIVED - Lorca council fed-up as vandals destroy lighting around Lorca church for the third time
The Lorca City Council is seeking help from the public in identifying those responsible for the vandalism on the church of San Juan
The church of San Juan in Lorca has once again sadly been targeted by vandals, who have smashed all of the exterior lights which were only replaced in March following a spate of vandalism. The Councillor for Citizen Security, José Luis Ruiz Guillén, confirmed on Monday, July 20, that a police investigation has been opened into the matter and urged any residents who have information to come forward so that the culprits can be apprehended.
The church is a local heritage site and although the structure currently remaining is little more than a ruin, it's still an important monument and is visited by many people on their way up to the nearby castle.
Officials condemned the act which will take “a significant amount from the municipal coffers” and considerable time to repair at a time of year when the municipality has other places in which to spend taxpayer's money.
Officials have confirmed that additional police surveillance will be positioned in the area to prevent further damage, and that the City Council has already allocated funds to improve the lighting systems throughout the municipality to “improve the visibility and safety of both pedestrians and vehicles.”
