ARCHIVED - Málaga fair cancelled for second consecutive year due to Covid
The fair, which is celebrated every August in the city of Málaga, Andalucía, was also cancelled last year
The Mayor of Málaga, Francisco de la Torre, has announced that the ‘Feria de Málaga’, which had already been postponed until September, will not go ahead this year.
At the end of June, the Mayor warned the population that the fair, which normally takes place in August, would have to be postponed until September this year, but following the recent rise in Covid cases and the new restrictions proposed by the regional government, he has taken the decision to cancel the celebration for the second year in a row.
He stated “this is a way of making sure the numbers don’t continue rising”, although this measure is still “not enough”. The Mayor also asked for “collaboration to help control the rise in infections”.
However, some musical activities and solidarity activities with the elderly will still go ahead, with some modifications to avoid large agglomerations of people.
The Mayor also mentioned that the rising number of Covid cases amongst young people, and other age groups, is creating pressure for the health sector, with almost 150 new hospitalizations being reported in just 24 hours this week.
This decision is bad news for the hospitality, commerce and taxi sectors, as well as for people with market and fair stalls, but as the Mayor pointed out, the number of people needed to make the fair worthwhile for these sectors “isn’t compatible” with the rising number of Covid cases in the city.
