ARCHIVED - Malaga beaches closed for Noche de San Juan this year
Málaga city joins other councils across Andalusia region in preventing gatherings for the night of San Juan
The city’s beaches will be closed from 10 pm on June 23 until 8 am on June 24
The beaches in the city of Málaga will be closed off for the Noche de San Juan (June 24), which marks the beginning of the summer, to try and limit gatherings and the creation of situations which could lead to contagions during the popular Spanish celebration.
The beaches will remain closed from 10 pm on June 23, which is when the traditional bonfires usually start, until 8 am on Thursday morning (June 24).
Normally families and friends gather on the beaches in groups to share a meal and a drink, lighting bonfires and setting off fireworks and firecrackers, the atmosphere sociable and happy.
The major councils generally light municipal bonfires, providing music and fireworks, with thousands of people packing onto the beaches.
In addition, officers from the Policía Local will also be adopting any other measures that they feel are necessary in order to guarantee that the population complies with the current anti-Covid rules and regulations, principally those relating to group gatherings.
According to a document signed by the Mayor of Málaga, Francisco de la Torre, these extra measures are necessary to avoid any further transmission of Covid-19 and are fully justified by the current epidemiological data in Spain. The document also requests that citizens act responsibly and collaborate with the authorities on the night from June 23 to June 24.
