ARCHIVED - Malaga city to reduce maximum speed limit on 3,603 roads to 30 kilometres an hour
Drivers in Malaga will have to observe new, lower speed limits on 3,603 of the city’s roads from Tuesday, May 11 when a new set of traffic regulations comes in to force.
Nearly 73 per cent of the roads in Malaga will have their speed limit lowered from 50 kilometres an hour as part of a series of changes to not only the city’s speed restrictions, but those of ALL urban areas right across the country from May 11.
From May 11, urban roads with one lane of traffic in each direction will be limited to 30 kilometres an hour, while one way roads with pavements will be limited to 20 kilometres an hour.
Those with two or more lanes of traffic in each direction will remain at 50 kilometres an hour as part of a national campaign to reduce road deaths in urban areas.
The changes will not be signposted immediately, meaning that drivers will need to be aware of the city’s regulations for each type of road.
Malaga’s Councillor for Mobility, Jose del Rio, said the lower limits would help to reduce city traffic and improve safety for cyclists.
He added that the council had not ruled out introducing speed cameras to enforce the new speed limits.
The changes come into force six months after Spain’s central government approved a regulation to lower speed limits across the country, giving councils time to put in place the new measures.
