ARCHIVED - Malaga exhibition celebrates Swedish diplomat who rescued thousands of Jews during Holocaust
The exhibition will run from October 14 to 29 in La Caja Blanca, Málaga (Andalucía)
The Swedish Embassy in Spain and the City Council of Málaga have inaugurated a unique exhibition on Raoul Wallenberg, a diplomat who saved thousands of Jews from the Holocaust during the Second World War, titled 'For me, there is no other option'. The event will be open to the public between October 14 and 29 in La Caja Blanca (Avenida Editor Ángel Caffarena, 8) from 6pm today.
The initiative includes an educational programme aimed at 3rd and 4th grade ESO students between October 18 and 26 that aims to teach younger people about human rights and moral fibre. The goal is to inspire students to reflect on topics such as the importance of human rights in society today and what we, as citizens, can do to advance these civil liberties.
Wallenberg was a Swedish businessman and diplomat who saved thousands of Jews from Nazi death camps during the final stages of the war. In Budapest, the hero established an elite and secret team within the Swedish delegation who specialised in creating the Schutzpass, a protective passport designed to move Jews to safety.
Wallenberg disappeared at the age of 32 during the last months of the war after the arrival of Soviet troops in Hungary. Since then, his family has struggled in vain to discover what happened to him.
Wallenberg never had the opportunity to offer his own account of events or to receive public recognition for his incredible feat of bravery.
