ARCHIVED - Marbella council relieves school caretaker suspected of drug trafficking of his duties
The man, who worked at a public school in the Costa del Sol town, caught the attention of police attention due to his extravagant lifestyle.
Marbella Town Hall has announced that a school caretaker currently under investigation as the main suspect in a police operation against drug trafficking has been relieved of his duties as a precaution.
A council spokesman said that they had only learned of the caretaker’s arrest when it appeared in the press, and they had not been contacted by the police or the courts to inform them of the matter. The HR department will have to decide where to station the suspect while the case comes to court, but it will certainly not be at the school, he said.
The caretaker, who is also the president of a Real Madrid supporters club in Marbella, was arrested during a joint Guardia Civil and National Police operation against cocaine trafficking, along with six other people. Officers seized more than two kilos of cocaine, several luxury vehicles, boats, and more than 10,000 euros in cash.
The man’s high standard of living, far beyond what one would expect of a local school caretaker, was what first caught the attention of the police. Although many are registered under various relatives' names, his assets were found to be worth more than half a million euros and include luxury cars, pleasure boats and a yacht moored at Marbella marina.
