ARCHIVED - Modifications to Cordoba Airport will help to triple passenger numbers
The improvements to Cordoba Airport in Andalucia will allow the transport hub to serve up to 100,000 passengers a year.
As Andalucia works to encourage tourists to begin visiting again following the pandemic, works to upgrade Cordoba Airport and increase the number of passengers it can receive are underway.
The works, which will be carried out while the airport remains open to passengers, will be carried out in four stages, kicking off with new signage at the front of the building.
The first stage will also include works to waterproof the building, while a second stage to adapt the arrivals and baggage reclaim areas will then be carried out, including building a new customs and passport hall. Stage three will involve expanding the boarding area and the final phase will involve modernising the rest of the airport.
Once complete, the current departures hall will be expanded to 145 square metres and the airport will boast a new boarding gate and baggage reclaim area, giving the new terminal the capacity to serve up to 100,000 passengers per year, three times its current amount.
While works are ongoing, officials have been marking off areas and modifying how passengers move through the terminal in a bid to avoid disrupting flights.
The renovation of the terminal building at Cordoba airport was awarded in mid-March for €1,280,000 in a project expected to last 11 months and which will be carried out by the companies Aeropuertos Obra Civil (Aocsa) and Sertec Ingenieria y Obras.
The last major work undertaken at the airport was the expansion of the runway, which was completed in February 2018. Since then, officials have been carrying out further modifications to boost passenger numbers at the airport.
