ARCHIVED - Moragas celebrations resume on the beach of playa del Castillo in Fuengirola
The boats typically used in these celebrations can be reserved from Monday to Friday from 9 am until 9 pm for a maximum of 25 people
From June 14 the Town Hall in Fuengirola decided to once again permit the celebration of ‘moragas’, a traditional festivity in Málaga and in the rest of Andalucía, including the use of the seiners (a type of fishing boat) on the playa del Castillo.
The ‘moragas’ have been taking place in Andalucía since the 19th century and, originally, those participating cast a fishing net and then cooked and ate the fish they'd caught on the beach. However, currently there is no pretence of fishing and the ‘moragas’ are simply a focal point for a fun celebration at the beach, and a place in which sardines or mackerel can be cooked over a fire.
However, during the past few months, the ‘moragas’ have not been allowed due to Covid restrictions.
From June 14, the public can reserve the sieners, or jábegas, for groups of up to 25 people, by submitting their request at the local police station.
The boats can be used from Monday to Friday from 9 am until 9 pm, as long as there isn’t a show on at the Marenostrum venue.
Unlike other years, different groups can not share the seiners, at least until the evolution of the pandemic allows further modification of the restrictions, which could include allowing the ‘moragas’ to take place at night.
To reserve one of these boats, at least two members of the group must provide a photocopy of their DNI, NIE or proof of residency, as well as paying a small contribution of 5.10 euros. In addition, to reserve the boat adapted for people with reduced mobility, a disability certificate must also be produced.
