ARCHIVED - More than 7 tonnes of hashish seized after police board drugs boat in Straits of Gibraltar, Cadiz
Police have seized more than seven tonnes of hashish after boarding a drugs boat out to sea off the Straits of Gibraltar.
Three people were also arrested in the raid after officers in Spain began investigating ‘Felsted,’ a large tug boat whose hold had allegedly been fitted out to store large amounts of drugs, in March 2020.
Investigations by Spanish police took place following interest in the vessel from authorities in the Netherlands and France who believed it was being used by a high-level criminal organisation to import hashish to Europe via Spain’s coasts.
Police were then able to identify the ship’s crew members and begin watching the boat before they finally used two high-speed Guardia Civil vessels to intercept Felsted in bad weather conditions in the Straits of Gibraltar.
The vessel was escorted back to the Port of Algeciras where police unloaded 300 bundles of hasish, weighing a total of 7,130 kilos.
The raid, which was carried out in a joint operation between the Guardia Civil, National Police and Spanish Tax Agency, is one of the largest drug busts by police so far this year in a wide scale crackdown on drug trafficking in the Strait of Gibraltar.
