ARCHIVED - Murcia bars and restaurants can extend terraces into parking spaces for another year
150 businesses in Murcia will benefit from the concession adopted as a result of Covid
Hospitality bosses in Murcia city have celebrated a major victory this week as the City Council has agreed to extend the permission for bars and restaurants to set up tables in parking spaces for another year.
According to councillor Juan Fernando Hernández Piernas, around 150 businesses have extended their outdoor terraces to adjoining parking spots throughout the municipality, added to more than 400 that had the authorisation pre-pandemic.
It was because of Covid that the council initially agreed to allow bars and restaurants to expand into the streets, and now the measure will continue until the end of 2022, with the option of applying for another one year extension after that.
Mr Hernández Piernas said that "the justification for these authorisations for terraces in parking areas was to help the economic reactivation of the hospitality sector" at a time when the limitations due to Covid had reduced the capacity inside. However, the councillor has pointed out that this measure "has not only benefited the hotel industry, but also commerce in general, since it generates a greater movement of customers in urban areas, while gaining in security and in cleaning".
And although the worst of the health crisis is seemingly behind us, the majority of the council believe the concession is still important since the hospitality sector has yet to rebound to pre-pandemic income levels.
The move hasn’t gained unanimous support, however, and several political parties abstained from voting until complaints from neighbourhood associations are evaluated, which have criticised the lack of parking in the municipality.
