Murcia braces for possible flooding as heavy rain warning extended to whole Region

The Regional Emergency Services and Civil Protection agencies across Murcia are on high alert as a yellow-level heavy rain warning has been extended to the entire region.

While this is only the lowest of the three alert levels, behind orange and red, the prospect of up to 15mm of accumulated rainfall per hour between 8am and 12pm in every part of Murcia means that some municipalities are preparing for the worst, given Murcia’s notorious proclivity for flooding when it rains.

The city of Lorca has activated its INUNLOR Plan in pre-emergency phase, with local authorities closely monitoring the weather.

The Councillor for Emergencies in Lorca, José Martínez, confirmed that the although the current probability of heavy rain ranges between 40% and 70%, they will remain on “continuous observation 24 hours a day” to respond to any eventualities swiftly.

At the same time, Lorca City Hall has noted that the ‘calima’ Saharan dust suspended in the air is currently at a higher level than usual, reducing air quality. When combined with the rain, of course, the calima can leave muddy deposits on surfaces it touches.

Emergency services on standby

Firefighters and other emergency response crews are fully prepared for rapid mobilisation and residents have been urged to take preventive measures.

These include securing outdoor objects that might be washed away by floodwaters, checking drains and roofs, and avoiding parking or camping in dry riverbeds or riverbanks. This caution is necessary to avoid being caught by sudden rises in water levels or unexpected flooding.

Authorities advise avoiding unnecessary travel. If travel is essential, it is recommended to stick to main roads and motorways. People in rural areas are encouraged to avoid rivers, streams and low-lying areas, as well as crossing flooded fords.

Motorists have been issued specific instructions to minimise the risk of flood-related accidents. Drivers are advised not to park in flood-prone areas and to avoid crossing flooded roads. They should also remain vigilant for landslides or sinkholes, knowing where the highest ground is located and how to reach it quickly.

If a vehicle becomes stuck or the water level begins to rise, drivers should exit the vehicle immediately. When water reaches the axle of the wheels, especially when crossing streams, or when the door becomes difficult to open, occupants should escape through the windows to ensure their safety.
