ARCHIVED - Murcia municipality to have two ice skating rinks this Christmas
Officials have confirmed that there will be 10% fewer lights in Murcia this festive season
While officials in the municipality continue to battle it out once again over the price of Christmas lights, which still haven’t been installed, the Hielomanía company is working against the clock to get the city’s second ice rink installed on Avenida de la Libertad before the Constitution holiday on December 6. The attraction is set to be open to the public until after the Three Kings in January, but the installers have not committed to a definite start date.
Despite the delays, Daniel Ato Marmol, head of Hielomanía, has highlighted the fact that his company has adopted an “inclusive” aspect by hiring people with functional diversity to work on the rink, through Astrade, the Association for the Attention to People with Autism and other Generalised Developmental Disorders of the Region of Murcia.
The second ice skating rink is being assembled in La Finca in time for Christmas, and will be called ‘The Magic Kingdom of Murcia’.
The mayor of Murcia has attributed the delay in switching on the lights to the need to avoid mass gatherings, but on Monday November 29 he confirmed that “there will be 10% fewer lights” in the municipality this year. In addition, Mr Serrano has warned that plans for the Three Kings Parade remain up in air due to the increase in coronavirus cases.
Officials have, however, expressed their desire to share the festive lighting fairly throughout the community of Murcia this festive season, endeavouring to avoid having “a municipality overflowing with lights when a third of the population of our municipality is on the brink of poverty and cannot pay their electricity bills”.
