ARCHIVED - Mysterious green stain appears in the sea on several Granada beaches
In previous years, such yellow and cloudy patches have proved to have faecal matter in them
For the fifth summer in a row, a large stain has appeared in the sea off the beaches of the Costa Tropical in Granada at the end of July.
At this time, when the beaches are more crowded with and visitors enjoying their summer break, the last thing anyone wants to see is a mysterious green patch in the water.
This year, the water has turned completely green and extends along several municipalities of the coast. The stain began to be visible this weekend in Playa de la Guardia, Motril, Torrenueva and Almuñécar, as reported by Spanish newspaper Ideal.

Locals are worried, fearing that the green water may be toxic, and are calling on politicians to sort the situation out immediately. However, biologists from the municipality of Sexitano have pointed out that it could just be the remains of algae and other marine microorganisms, according to the councillor of Tourism and Beaches and deputy mayor of La Herradura, Daniel Barbero.
Carolina, who has spent “almost all her life” holidaying in Salobreña, Granada, says, “There is no way to get around it and few dare to go into the water. It occupies practically the whole beach. It’s a real eyesore.”
She added, “Since the summer started, the water gets cloudy from midday onwards, but this is something else. We don’t know if it’s harmful to bathers. Other times you can see perfectly well that it is the remains of sewage, but now it is not clear.”
The appearance of cloudy water is a recurring incident in Granada during the summer season, and Seprona environmental police have taken samples in the past. The summer before the pandemic, a yellowish substance appeared which turned out to be formed mostly by plant plankton, but in other years, faecal remains have also been found in the stain.
For this reason, especially, many on the Costa Tropical are worried about what exactly will turn out to be in the current green mess.
