ARCHIVED - Málaga police dogs sniff out one million euros in hidden compartment of SUV
The money was hidden under a false bottom in the car boot and the driver could now face administrative charges in the province of Málaga, Andalucía
During a routine police check, two canine members of the Policía Nacional detected almost a million euros in a car boot in the city of Málaga.
The smell of the notes attracted the attention of the dogs and the dog handlers noticed that one of them was marking the rear end of an SUV, specifically the right-hand side of the boot.
Officers initially thought that the car could be carrying drugs and took the vehicle to the police station, but, after thoroughly examining the boot of the car, the police found a secret compartment under a false bottom, which contained hundreds of well-organized bank notes.
There were 50, 20, 10 and 5-euro notes in the compartment, adding up to a total value of 999,630 euros.
The woman driving the car now faces a hefty administrative penalty for transporting such a large amount of cash without the necessary documentation from Hacienda (the national treasury).
In Spain, to transport cash over the value of 100,000 euros, an official document from Hacienda is required, as part of the national efforts to prevent money laundering.
