ARCHIVED - New life for Cadiz salt marshes thanks to EU-funded project
Three salinas in Cádiz (Andalusia) will be receiving funding for experimental projects designed to give them new life
Three applicants with plans to recover artisanal salinas in Cádiz and make them sustainable and financially viable have been accepted to take part in the University of Cádiz’s MedArtSal (Sustainable Management Model for Mediterranean Artisanal Salinas) project.
Salinas have been built and exploited in Spain for thousands of years, some of the biggest salt pans extracting salt from saline water built during the period of Roman occupation in Spain when vast quantities of salt were shipped from Spain to all over the Roman Empire.
During the last century, many have fallen into disuse and this project aims to recover these installations and find new ways of making them viable, as the salt flats are an important part of the environmental diversity of Spain.
The selected salinas have presented plans to grow microalgae, use mud for cosmetic production and restore a very old tide mill, and will receive between 10,000 and 17,000 euros from EU funds allocated to the project.
Results should be visible within a year the project leaders have reported.
