ARCHIVED - Ninth body washes up on Almeria coast
Police believe the deceased were migrants desperate to reach Andalucía’s Costa del Sol
After eight bodies were found off Almería coast in just a 72 hour time frame, yet another corpse has been spotted in the municipality of Carboneras.
The emergency services received a call at 5.50pm on Wednesday afternoon, September 22, alerting them of the latest body to appear in Almería, this time on Playa del Lacón, where a member of the public saw the dead body floating in the shallow water near the shore.
Since Sunday September 19, nine bodies have now appeared in Almería, including a small child, leading the police to believe that the deceased could be immigrants who were attempting to reach the Costa del Sol.
Guardia Civil officers are now investigating whether one or more pateras (small, and mostly unsafe, boats used to transport migrants) could have capsized during the dangerous journey from the African continent.
As immigrant boats have been known to carry as many as 60 or 70 passengers, more migrants could be found in the upcoming days and weeks.
The main culprits for the unsafe journeys between Africa and Spain are the ‘immigration mafias’ who organize the trips and charge desperate immigrants extortionate amounts of money for a seat on the pateras. These criminal gangs have proved consistently that they are not concerned for the safety of their passengers, as many of the boats capsize or are unable to reach their destination, leaving the migrants stranded in the sea.
