ARCHIVED - No change to Caminito del Rey ticket prices despite new management
A new consortium has won the contract to manage the spectacular walkway in the province of Málaga (Andalusia) for the next five years.
Ticket prices for the highly-popular Caminito del Rey walkway in the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes gorge in Álora, Ardales and Antequera (Málaga) will be remaining at 10 euros, even though a new concessionary has taken over the project and under the contract terms, could have increased the price to 12 euros.
Further good news for those who have yet to visit is that while for the first year the maximum number of daily visitors will stay at 1,100, it could be increased to 1,300 for the second and third years and to 1,500 for the fourth and fifth. This is also excellent news for the rural area's tourism sector as it will also bring more visitors to the surrounding towns and villages.
The topic of tickets has been a controversial one ever since the attraction re-opened to the public in 2015, as there were frequently complaints that tickets were snapped up in advance by hotels and businesses and offered to the public as part of packages including accommodation or meals before they were made available to the general public, so it has been very difficult for those travelling independently who don´t want to stay in a local hotel to obtain a ticket on occasions.
With this in mind, the winning bid has promised that 60 per cent of tickets will be made available for purchase online while 35 per cent will be allocated to authorised agencies and establishments, and the remaining 5 per cent will be saved for educational, scientific and promotional visits.
Málaga Provincial Council considered eight bids to take over the running of the breathtaking walkway and has chosen a consortium formed by Sando construction company, Salzillo Servicios Integrales and Mundo Management event organisers to manage the attraction for the next five years.
The new group, which is likely to take over in mid-May, will be paying the provincial authorities an annual fee of 350,000 euros for the privilege and covering 46.3 per cent of maintenance costs. It has also pledged to invest in making improvements to the Caminito’s surroundings and to provide better conditions for workers.
