ARCHIVED - Railway reopens connecting Malaga to Seville after two years of delays
The railway re-entered service on Monday May 31, connecting up Malaga and Sevilla in Andalucia.
Following two years of protracted contract negotiations, the railway service connecting Malaga to Sevilla has finally reopened.
The line is back in service after train company Adif opened up a 9.3 kilometre length of track between the towns of Osuna and Pedrera in Sevilla province which had been cut off since a bridge collapse in October 2018, forcing rail passengers between Malaga and Sevilla to take a bus replacement service for part of their journey.
Works to repair the track had in fact been complete since April 2019, however lengthy negotiations between the Spanish government and the Junta de Andalucia over the terms of the contract to transfer the new section of line into the State Railroad Network delayed the actual opening of the line, leaving passengers between Malaga and Sevilla without the direct rail service for more than two years.
Finally, on March 23 this year the Junta de Andalucia agreed to transfer the section of track to Adif for €33.56 million, allowing the track to reopen to passengers and connecting up two of Andalucia’s most popular cities in time for summer.
Similarly, train company Renfe has announced it is expanding several of its routes across Andalucia as passenger numbers increase again following the pandemic as travel reopens.
