ARCHIVED - Rebound in infections with more than 5,000 cases: Andalusia Covid update June 24
The largest number of coronavirus cases has been recorded in Malaga
Covid experts across Spain are now largely in agreement that we are in the thick of the seventh wave, a fact that has largely gone unnoticed since hospital admissions have remained relatively stable in recent months. However, the Omicron variant is mutating once again, and scientists believe that the new strains are responsible for the uptick in infections in Andalucía and elsewhere.
Coronavirus infections
The regional health authorities in Andalucía have registered 5,009 new coronavirus cases in the latest pandemic update on Friday June 24.
Malaga has been hit the hardest, with 1,196 infections, followed by Granada (876).
These figures bring the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,537,053.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
The number of patients hospitalised for Covid in Andalucía has dropped from 518 on Tuesday to 477 this Friday, although there are now 28 people being treated for coronavirus in the region’s ICUs, an increase of one.
By provinces: in Almería (33 hospitalisations, of which none are in the ICU), Cádiz (67 hospitalisations, of which 3 are in the ICU), Córdoba (31 hospitalisations, of which 3 are in the ICU), Granada (66 hospitalisations, of which 2 are in ICU), Huelva (27 hospitalisations, of which none are in ICU), Jaén (61 hospitalisations, of which 8 in ICU), Malaga (96 hospitalisations, of which 6 are in ICU) and Seville (96 hospitalisations, of which 6 are in ICU).
Since the last update, a further 29 Covid-related fatalities have occurred, which brings the overall death toll since the start of the health crisis to 14,232.
The province of Seville has reported the largest number of deceased (13), followed by Granada (5).
Cumulative incidence rate
The average incidence of infections over a two-week period in Andalucía has risen substantially from 268.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants to 309.7 cases.
Vaccination data
As of June 24, a total of 18,575,748 doses have been supplied to the community. Overall, 7,450,283 people have now been double jabbed while 4,372,831 people have received their first booster.
