ARCHIVED - Renfe begins to train drivers for new Almeria to Granada line
Tests on the new Almeria to Granada route are now complete.
As travel begins to reopen across Andalucia, safety tests to a new direct train line between Almeria and Granada are now complete ahead of the line’s opening.
Adif has concluded reliability tests of the new train track in the sections between the Andarax-El Puche River and Almeria, and train company Renfe is now training 15 drivers to work on the new line.
The drivers will operate both the route between Almeria and Granada and the longer-distance lines between Almeria and Madrid.
The Almeria to Granada line had been out of service for around 30 months due to underground works on the route, forcing passengers to take a bus between Almeria city and the Huercal-Viator station in Almeria.
The €25.34 million works began in August 2019, with the final underground stage in El Puche in Almeria being completed last month and the line is expected to now be back in service on July 3.
Public transport services across Andalucia are beginning to reopen following a major decrease in passenger figures during the pandemic, with Renfe expanding its train services from Cordoba in June as tourists arrive for the summer.
