ARCHIVED - Rescued Loggerhead returned to the wild in Almeria after recovering from pneumonia
The loggerhead turtle was picked up by a boat off the coast of Almeria, Andalucia, in May
Following a month of rehabilitation, a loggerhead turtle rescued from the sea off Almeria has been returned to the wild after recovering from pneumonia.
The turtle had been rescued by a Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food boat last May 6 before being taken to the Equinac recovery center in Almeria where it was treated for pneumonia.
Weighing nine kilos and 36 centimetres long, the turtle has reportedly responded well enough to veterinary treatment to be released back into the wild, and after being implanted with a special chip which will allow it to be tracked, it was put back out to sea by the Civil Guard and Equinac.
Before releasing the turtle, its rescuers had been renamed in Paqui in memory of the mother of one of Equinac’s members.
Equinac is responsible for looking after the many stranded sea turtles which are found on Almeria’s coastline.
The month before, another stranded loggerhead turtle was also rescued from a beach in Malaga after being found with plastic in its mouth. The young turtle is expected to be released back into the wild this summer.
