ARCHIVED - Russian oil tanker headed for Gibraltar will be turned away, says government
The controversial Sunny Liger will not be allowed to unload in British Gibraltar Territorial Waters
A Russian freight ship which is currently making its way to Gibraltar with a cargo of oil will be prevented from entering British Gibraltar Territorial Waters, receiving any services at the port or offloading its consignment, according to Chief Minister Fabian Picardo.
Although the European sanctions levied against Putin and his followers don’t actually cover oil and gas deliveries given the threat of an energy crisis facing Spain and other nations, the 42,000-tonne Sunny Liger has already been refused permission to dock in Amsterdam and Sweden.
The vessel technically flies the flag of the Marshall Islands, but to all intents and purposes is a Russian ship.
As the crew of the tanker lingered in Dutch waters awaiting further instructions, the Ukrainian embassy in the Netherlands urged the government to demand its “immediate departure,” and when the ship attempted to unload its diesel in Sweden, dock workers refused to assist.
According to the tracking website MarineTraffic, the Sunny Liger is currently en route to Gibraltar and is due to arrive on Wednesday May 11, but the government explained that it is not uncommon for ships to set their destinations as the Rock even if they only plan on remaining in Gibraltar waters until follow-up orders come through.
In any case, the Gibraltar government has insisted that the Port Authority is well prepared for any such occasion and is keeping a close eye on all approaching vessels in case they have links with Russia, in which case they will be turned away.
