The Costa Blanca becomes a golfing goldmine, boasting a 601 million euro success
The majority of golfers holidaying in Alicante come from Britain and Nordic countries
The Costa Blanca is celebrating a hole in one for its golf tourism industry, which brought in a whopping 601 million euros last year. The Association of Golf Courses of the Costa Blanca and Valencian Community has just released a study that reveals the impressive figures, and it's clear that golf tourism is a game-changer for the Alicante coast.
This eye-opening report shows that golf tourism has become a major player in the region's economy overall, generating 918 million euros and creating more than 10,000 jobs in the Valencian Community.
Without doubt though, the Costa Blanca, with 20 of the 30 existing golf courses, is the clear winner, with 601 million and 6,655 jobs attributed to golf tourism. That's a staggering 66% of the total.
It’s little wonder that Orihuela is trying to snag a piece of this pie, with a marketing plan in place to entice golfers and other cruise passengers away from the coasts and towards the city.
But it's not just the numbers that are impressive. The study also reveals a new profile of tourist: the golf enthusiast. These visitors have a high purchasing power, spending an average of 163.95 euros per day, compared to 125.60 euros in 2018.
They're also more likely to stay in apartments rather than buy homes, and their average stay has increased to more than 11 days.
Golfers taking a swing in the Valencian Community come mostly from abroad (83%), and this figure rises to 86% in Alicante province, where foreign players account for 86% of the total.
As usual, visitors from Great Britain make up the majority, along with travellers from Nordic countries.
The Association of Golf Courses of the Costa Blanca and Valencian Community has 26 golf courses, 60 tourism companies and 20 collaborating companies.
The province of Alicante is the clear leader, with the most golf courses and a strong presence of British tourists. However, the study notes that the market is shifting, with Nordic countries like Sweden and Iceland becoming increasingly important.
