ARCHIVED - Three British criminals kidnap a couple in Marbella at gunpoint
Andalucía authorities have linked the kidnapping to a debt owed by one of the victims
Officers from the Policía Nacional in the province of Málaga have rescued a young couple who were being held hostage by three British criminals at a property in Marbella.
The authorities were alerted to the kidnapping after one if the victims managed to send a WhatsApp message to a friend, who then went to the police station in Marbella.
Thanks to the information contained in the message, which was sent while the captors were sleeping, the police knew where the property was located, how many kidnappers there were and that the criminals were likely to be armed.
Police officers surrounded the property, arrested the three suspects, who attempted to escape via the balcony, and rescued the two victims who were tied up in one of the rooms.
Although the detainees were not armed at the time of their arrest, police later found a loaded gun hidden in an air conditioning unit in the property.
According to the victims, the ordeal began when they had arranged to meet an acquaintance at a local restaurant; when they arrived at the dinner venue, the couple were sent the location of a new restaurant and their acquaintance asked them to pick up two other people on the way.
Once in the car, one of the new dinner guests pulled out a gun and tied the couple up, and after picking up a third individual, the two victims were taken to an abandoned plot of waste land, where they spent several hours, and then transported to their own home, where they were tied up.
Further police investigation revealed that the kidnapping was linked to a debt owed by the male victim and that the three captors were all “extremely dangerous” British nationals with extensive criminal records for drug trafficking and violent offences, two of whom were wanted for having violated parole.
One of the victims, the man, was also arrested after it was revealed that he had falsified official documents.
