For airlines operating across Spain, Sunday October 29 marked the official start of the winter season, one which promises to break yet more records at Alicante-Elche Airport. According to Aena, the low season will be longer than ever before with 6.4 million seats available until March 30 – that’s a 23.2% increase on the same period last year.
It should come as little surprise that the main reason for this travel boom is British tourists, who make up around a third of all visitors passing through Spanish airports.
Between now and the end of March, it’s estimated that a staggering 2,130,000 UK passengers will be welcomed at Spanish airports, and the number of seats available between Britain and Alicante will increase this season for the first time since the pandemic.
The airlines have scheduled around 34,500 commercial flights at Alicante-Elche airport for the winter season, which will last five months.
“This implies an increase of 20.8% in the number of flights compared to last year,” according to airport sources, a percentage that is just slightly lower than the number of passengers expected overall.
While Britain undoubtedly tops the list, Europe as a whole accounts for the majority of traffic to and from Alicante, while the domestic market will also improve by 13% this year.
Alicante Airport covers 156 routes with 102 destinations across 24 countries. Of the 90 cities on offer, the largest connections are with London (605,000 seats), Manchester (328,000 seats), Brussels (287,000 seats), Barcelona (261,000 seats) and Palma de Mallorca (235,000 seats).
