ARCHIVED - Two kilometres of walking trails reopened in Marbella, Andalusia
The improvement works were carried out in the Pecho de las Cuevas, a popular spot for athletes in Andalucía
The improvement of the trails that run through the Pecho de las Cuevas, a green area right in the heart of the city of Marbella, Málaga is 70% complete after an investment of 1.2 million euros under the Sports Facilities conservation Plan for 2021. Two kilometres of tracks in the Andalucían city have now been opened which are popular with walkers and athletes who use the area as a running circuit.
The mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, visited the area on Tuesday September 21 and explained that surface water and overgrown tree roots, which posed a significant risk of injury to athletes, have been removed in order to create “an ideal space” for training in all disciplines.
The extensive works have so far focused on solving the drainage problems, with the installation of 16 new water outlet points. The two kilometre route has been entirely repaved, half a kilometre of fencing has been repaired and 32 lights have been installed to facilitate visitors during the winter months.
In the coming months, the next phase of the Pecho de las Cuevas regeneration plan will begin which aims at improving the remaining 1,000 metres of trails.
